Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 vs Dimensity 1080

Dimensity 1080 vs. Snapdragon 7 Gen 1

The midrange smartphone market is hard to understand and can be very confusing for the average person. However, don’t you worry because that’s why this author is here. In this article, we’ll compare two popular SoCs: the Dimensity 1080 vs. Snapdragon 7 Gen 1.

The Dimensity 1080 is one of MediaTek’s new entries in the upper midrange market. It can be found in many phones like the Doogee V30T, Doogee V31GT, Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G and Redmi Note 12 Pro+ 5G, Realme 10 Pro+ 5G, Samsung Galaxy A34 5G, and Infinix Zero 5G 2023.

On the other hand, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, announced in May 2022, is the older one. It is an upper midrange SoC from Qualcomm, and it replaces the Snapdragon 780G. Unlike  most Snapdragon SoCs, this one hasn’t been widely adopted and can only be found in a few phones like Xiaomi 13 Lite and Honor 90 5G.

Now, let’s compare them head to head.

Dimensity 1080 vs. Snapdragon 7 Gen 1

Performance:

The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 uses 4 Cortex A710 CPU cores for the more resource-intensive tasks. The Dimensity 1080 on the other can only present 2 Cortex A78 CPU cores for the same types of tasks. As a result, the 7 Gen 1 will perform better than the Dimensity 1080.

Gaming:

When it comes to gaming, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 has a much better Adreno 644 on board. The Dimensity 1080 on the other has weaker Mali G68 MP4 and thus would come second to the 7 Gen 1. If that wasn’t enough of an advantage, Qualcomm encourages game developers to optimize their games specifically for Adreno GPUs. This helps games to run better and smoother on Snapdragon SoCs. The 7 Gen 1 wins again by having a much a better GPU and game optimization

Camera and Video:

Both support up to 200MP cameras and 4K video at 30fps. However, Qualcomm seems to have better ISPs and AI for image and video processing.

RAM and Storage:

This is a tie as both SoCs support LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage.

Network Connectivity:

When it comes to network connectivity, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 is equipped with a Modem which supports faster LTE and 5G support. The Dimensity 1080 on the other hand comes in both LTE and 5G download speeds.

Battery Life:

Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 is built on a 4nm Samsung process whilst the Dimensity 1080 is built on a less efficient 5nm TSMC process. As a result, the 7 Gen 1 wins due to better efficiency.

Conclusion:

Whilst the Dimensity 1080 is a very solid SoC, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 offers better performance, gaming, connectivity, and battery life. It is the better SoC.
