Poco F7 vs Poco F7 Pro

Poco F7 vs Poco F7 Pro: Which One Should You Buy?

Since its inception, the Poco F series has been focused on a singular mission. To provide Flagship level performance on a budget. This has been its greatest asset (as well as its undoing). Over the years Poco has continually churned out phones that offer high end performance at less than flagship price. The Poco F series to be specific typifies Poco’s commitment to their ethos. It is in light of this that we’re going to discuss the Poco F7 vs Poco F7 Pro.

There are three devices in the Poco F7 lineup. They are:

  • Poco F7
  • Poco F7 Pro
  • Poco F7 Ultra

The Poco F7 is the base device, the Poco F7 Pro is supposed to be better than the F7 whilst the Poco F7 Ultra is the best of the three.

Having seen what both phones offer, I’m inclined to believe that the Poco F7 is not a bad deal at all! So let’s look at the specs together and please let me know what you think at the end.

📱Body:

Unlike your regular mid-range devices, both devices are built with aluminum frames and a premium glass back. They’re also both IP68 water resistant and can be taken down to 2m deep in water for a max of 30 mins before the sealing breaks. I won’t advise that though.

The Poco F7 is the bigger phone and it has a bigger screen. It is also the heavier device as well, weighing 215g to the Poco F7 Pro’s 206g.

So when it comes to the body, the Poco F7 is well matched with the Poco F7 Pro.

📺 Display:

The Poco F7 Pro undoubtedly wins this round with its 2K (1440p) AMOLED display. The Poco F7 has to make do with a 1280p AMOLED display.

Despite being the base device, the Poco F7 has a bigger 6.83″ display compared to the standard 6.67″ display on the F7 Pro but the F7 Pro has the better display quality.

In other areas, they’re both tied. They both are AMOLED panels, support 120Hz refresh rates, 3840Hz PWM screen dimming, Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and 3200 nits max brightness.

Display goes to the F7 Pro

📊 Operating System

Both phones run on HyperOS 2 which is powered by Android 15. Xiaomi is offering around 4 years of updates here.

🖥️ Performance

This one here is very very interesting! The Poco F7 is equipped with the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 whilst the Poco F7 Pro is powered by 2023’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 flagship processor.

This contest is as close and as confusing as their naming scheme. In fact this is one even more confusing than when the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 was able to take on and match the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 has the better CPU performance but the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 wins in GPU performance. They are mostly tied for the rest specs.

On Geek Bench, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 wins whilst on AnTuTu, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 wins.

It now begs the question of isn’t the Poco F7 Pro supposed to be well ahead of the vanilla F7 in performance?

What this means is that both phones will give you around the same level of performance with neither coming out as the clear winner.

💾 Memory (RAM and storage)

Both phones use LPDDR5x RAM (4800MHz) and UFS 4.1. They also both offer memory configurations of 12/256GB and 12/512GB.

📹 Cameras

Both phones use a 50+8MP rear setup as well as a 20MP selfie. They look similar however apart from the 20MP Omnivision OV20B selfie, they use different cameras.

For the main cameras:

The Poco F7 uses the Sony LYT-600 whilst the Poco F7 Pro uses the Omnivision OV50 Light Hunter 800. From the sensor size and the pixel size, I can state that the OV50 is the better main sensor.

For the ultrawide camera:

The Poco F7 utilizes the Omnivision OV08F whilst the Poco F7 Pro uses the Omnivision OV08D10. Both image sensors use the pixel and sensor sizes so it’s hard to tell which one’s better.

Whilst the hardware is important, we should never forget the importance of the processor and the software that’ll be used on the phone.

Since both processors appear to have the same ISP, NPU and use the same HyperOS software, I’ll wager that the camera performance will be slightly better on the Poco F7 Pro but only just. Otherwise it’s a tie.

For videos:

Xiaomi has done a bit of favouritism here. The Poco F7 Pro supports up to 8K video at 24fps. In addition it supports 4K, 1080p and 720p resolutions. The Poco F7 on the other hand is limited to just 4K video at 60fps with support for 1080p and 720p video.

I call it favouritism because the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 on the Poco F7 does support 8K video but Xiaomi probably shut it off to protect the sales of the F7 Pro.

I know this because they did it to Poco F5 owners by turning off the support 4K@60fps to protect the sales of the F5 Pro. Thankfully we could turn it on with the aid of Gcam.

Generally speaking, for camera and video, this one’s a tie unless you’re a pixel peeper like me. Then the slight advantage goes to the Poco F7 Pro.

🔊 Sound

Both phones come with stereo speakers and sadly do not have the legendary 3.5mm jack. They both support 24-bit/192kHz Hi-Res & Hi-Res Wireless audio which is tuned by Snapdragon sound.

🛜 Comms

They’re both 5G phones with support for Bluetooth 5.4, WiFi 7, GPS, NFC, IR blaster and USB C (2.0). There’s no support for FM radio and honestly I was expecting USB 3.1 but it is what it is.

Sensors

Both phones support under display Fingerprint sensors (optical for F7 and ultrasonic for the F7 Pro), accelerometer, gyroscope, proximity sensors, and a compass.

🔋Battery and charging

This is the one area where the F7 outshines it’s Pro sibling. The global version of the F7 ships with a 6500mAh battery whilst the Indian version is powered by massive 7550mAh battery. The F7 Pro on the other hand only has a 6000mAh battery.

Both phones support 90W fast charge and can 0-100% under 45 mins.

The Poco F7 Pro has a battery life of almost 14 hours whilst in active use (GSMArena) and I support that the Poco F7 should have better scores.

Note: I have heard some troubling news about the 8s Gen 4 in the battery consumption department but I reserve judgement until more data is available.

Prices

I currently do not have those at the moment. If you do, please let me know.

Tally

  • Body: Tie
  • Display: F7 Pro
  • OS: Tie
  • Performance: Tie
  • Memory: Tie
  • Cameras: Tie
  • Video: F7 Pro (slightly)
  • Sound: Tie
  • Comms: Tie
  • Sensors: Tie
  • Battery: F7
  • Charging: Tie

Summary and Conclusion

As you can see, when it comes to the Poco F7 vs Poco F7 Pro, the only reason to pick the F7 Pro here for me is the slightly better CPU performance and 8K video recording. Other than that, the Poco F7 is as capable as the F7 Pro and should sell for less whilst offering the same level of performance.

I love the fact that Xiaomi made the F7 a very competitive phone but I dislike the fact that they tried to nerf its video capabilities to protect the F7 Pro.

You cannot go wrong with both devices anyway. They’re very solid and will be future-proof for the next 5 years at least.
