MediaTek Helio G100 vs G99

MediaTek Helio G100 vs Helio G99

MediaTek has announced a new SoC. This one is as new as my high school lucky T-shirt from over 15 years ago. Yup this one is called the MediaTek Helio G100. So let’s do a MediaTek Helio G100 vs G99 comparison.

The Helio G100 announcement

So a short while ago we talked about how Qualcomm did a Snapdragon event for India and dropped a new SoC, the Snapdragon 4S Gen 2. We looked at its specs, and talked about its highlights and shortcomings.

In what seems to be a counter shot, Tecno have announced a MediaTek Helio G100 and I was hoping that MediaTek would surprise me. I was desperately hoping that they would. When I saw the Helio G100, every brain neuron in my frontal Cortex was screaming renamed Helio G99. It is a renamed Helio G99.

Performance

When it comes to performance, there’s virtually no difference between the Helio G100 and its predecessor, the Helio G99. The CPU cores, GPUs, process node and instruction set architecture are essentially the same. There’s no clock speed update either. It is essentially a copy paste so if you are upgrading from the Helio G99 to the Helio G100, you’re getting the same performance.

RAM and Storage

There’s no difference here either, you get LPDDR4X RAM running at 2133MHz with UFS 2.2 storage. Same thing

Camera/Video

This is the only area where you get an upgrade. The Helio G99 supports a max camera resolution of 108MP whilst the Helio G100 has a max support of 200MP. With that being said, neither the ISP nor the NPU have been upgraded. This should raise some eyebrows about this “update”.

Connectivity

Both SoCs only support up to 4G LTE (Cat. 13) and WiFi 5. The G100 gets a little bump in Bluetooth connection (from 5.2 to 5.4) over the older Helio G99.

Summary and Conclusion

I expect that their marketers and marketing team would spin something quickly very soon and come up with a marketing campaign. Do not fall for it. The MediaTek Helio G100 and G99 are the same processor and no amount of whitewash will obscure this simple fact.
