MediaTek has introduced a new system-on-a-chip (SoC) known as the MediaTek Dimensity 6100+. However, this SoC is essentially a rebranded version of their previous G90 series SoCs.
The reason for this rebranding lies in the changing market demand. With a shift from 4G to 5G-capable SoCs, MediaTek wanted to ensure that they could offer 5G-capable chips to meet this demand and compete with rivals like Qualcomm.
Qualcomm took a different approach by completely refreshing their Snapdragon series, which meant they didn’t release any new lower midrange SoCs for a year. MediaTek, on the other hand, didn’t want to lose its market position to Qualcomm and decided to rebrand its older G series SoCs, such as the Helio G99 and Helio G96. They simply replaced the older 4G modems with newer 5G modems and gave them new names, effectively creating new 5G SoCs.
For MediaTek, this rebranding also allowed them to move away from the Helio brand and fully embrace the Dimensity name. The Dimensity 6100+ is one such rebranded SoCs, and although it may have a new name, its core components are not new.
Specifications of the MediaTek Dimensity 6100+
Here are the key specifications of the MediaTek Dimensity 6100+:
- CPU cores: 2 Cortex A76 (2.2GHz) + 6 Cortex A55 (2.0GHz)
- GPU: Mali G57 MC2
- ISA: ARMv8.2-A
- Fabrication: 6nm TSMC process
- RAM: LPDDR4X (2133MHz)
- Storage: UFS 2.2
- ISP: MediaTek Imagiq (3x ISP)
- AI processing: Neuropilot
- Camera support: Up to 108MP
- Video capabilities: 1080p at 30fps
- Display resolution: 2560 × 1080p
- Modem: MediaTek 5G Modem
Performance
In terms of performance, the Dimensity 6100+ features 2 Cortex A76 CPU cores for performance tasks and 6 Cortex A55 CPU cores for power efficiency. This configuration is typical of older upper midrange SoCs. The performance of the Dimensity 6100+ is similar to that of the Helio G99, making it a capable midrange chip.
Other SoCs with similar performance levels include the:
- Snapdragon 732G,
- Dimensity 6100+,
- Dimensity 6020,
- Dimensity 700,
- Dimensity 730, and
- Snapdragon 720G.
It’s worth noting that the Dimensity 6100+, 6020, 700, and 730 are essentially the same SoC. In essence, the Dimensity 6100+ is a rebrand of existing chips rather than an entirely new offering.
While rebranding older flagship SoCs as newer midrange options can provide better performance while keeping costs down, MediaTek’s extensive rebranding strategy across most of their Dimensity lineup has drawn criticism. Except for the Dimensity 9000 series, most of their Dimensity chips are essentially rebranded versions of previous models.
Camera and Video
In terms of camera and video capabilities, the Dimensity 6100+ supports cameras of up to 108MP and can capture video at 1080p resolution at 30fps.
Network Connectivity
Regarding network connectivity, like most Dimensity SoCs, this chip features a 5G modem and is 5G capable. It also supports 4G LTE, 3G, Bluetooth 5.1, and WiFi 6.
Battery life
The Dimensity 6100+ is built on a 6nm TSMC process, which should contribute to decent battery life.
