Following the spate of new midrange releases by Samsung, two phones stand out boldly. These are the Samsung Galaxy A34 and A54 5G. These are two new devices that have recently been released by Korean giants Samsung. The other two being the Galaxy A14 and A14 5G.
Whilst Samsung are world renown for their flagship S series, with the most recent being the S23 series, they have a very healthy midrange segment.
These include the A, M and F series depending on the part of the world that you live in. There’s nothing to lose brain cells over as these phones are usually clones of each other. For example, the A13, F13 and M13 are all the same thing.
Samsung’s midrange phones are usually clones of each other designated for different geographical regions.
Samsung Galaxy A34 and A54
The Samsung Galaxy A34 and A54 are both upper midrange phones with very capable processors. These phones are fairly powerful and are very fast.
They also both look like the flagship S23 series. I believe the aim is to extend the grandiose image of the Flagship devices to the Midrangers. Both devices have IP67 water resistance, Gorilla Glass 5 screen protection and 25W fast charge.
The A34
The A34 is a good upper midrange phone. The A30 series usually slots below the A50 series in Samsung’s hierarchy and this means that the A34 is marginally inferior to the A54. The key specs include:
- SoC: MediaTek Dimensity 1080

Performance
The A34 houses the MediaTek Dimensity 1080 SoC. You can find this SoC on the Redmi Note 12 Pro and 12 Pro+ as well. This SoC is very powerful and has an AnTuTu score of around 530K. It can handle almost anything thrown at it. In fact, the A34 beats the A54 on AnTuTu by almost 30,000 points.
Software
The software on board is Samsung’s One UI 5 based on Android 13. This OS, unlike the One UI Core 5, is the full version of Samsung’s mobile operating system and gives the full experience. Samsung also provides a good amount of support for their smartphones so that’s something to keep an eye out for.
Display
The display here is a 6.6″ 1080p Super AMOLED panel which gives a very good viewing experience from every angle. Images and videos would look very good and crisp. There’s an in-display fingerprint sensor for unlocking the device.
Cameras and Battery
The main camera here is a yet to be confirmed 48MP camera which should do okay in good lighting conditions. Along with it, there’s an 8MP Ultrawide camera and a 5MP macro lens. In front, there’s a 13MP selfie and you can record videos of up to 4K @30fps. For power, there’s a 5,000mAh battery with 25W fast charge.
Whilst this is a very good device, the pricing has raised eyebrows a fair bit because I think it’s a bit steep. However, if you have deep pockets, then feel free to splurge. If you have even deeper pockets, you should be looking at the Samsung Galaxy A54.
The A54
Just like the A34, the A54 is also an upper midrange device but it packs some better specs that the A34. You can see this from the specs:
The key specs include:
- SoC: Samsung Exynos 1380
- GPU: Mali G68 MP5
- RAM: LPDDR5
- Software: Android 13, One UI 5.1
- Storage: UFS 3.1
- microSD: yes (hybrid SIM slot)
- Display: 6.4″ Super AMOLED, 1080p, 120Hz, 400ppi, 1000nits, GG5
- Camera: Triple 50 (IMX766) +12+5MP
- Selfie: 32MP
- Audio: Dual stereo loudspeaker, no 3.5mm jack
- Video: 4K@30fps, 1080p@60fps
- Battery: 5000mAh (25W charge)
- Network: 4G (LTE Cat. 18), 5G
- Bluetooth 5.3
- WiFi 5
- Prices:
- ₦288,000, $378, ₹38,999 (6+128GB)
- ₦301,000 (8+128GB)
- ₦323,000.00 (8+256GB)
Performance
The Galaxy A54 sports the new powerful Samsung Exynos 1380 SoC which has a score of 500+k on AnTuTu. While it presents a lower AnTuTu score when compared to the Dimensity 1080 on the A34, the Exynos 1080 has a better GPU, better multi core CPU performance, better battery management and faster network connection speeds. Just like the A34, it can handle almost anything you throw at it.
Software
The software on board is Samsung’s One UI 5 based on Android 13. This OS, unlike the One UI Core 5, is the full version of Samsung’s mobile operating system and gives the full experience. Samsung also provides a good amount of support for their smartphones so that’s something to keep an eye out for.
Display
The A54 has a smaller 6.4″ 1080p Super AMOLED display which is good for small hands and gives a very good viewing experience from every angle. Images and videos would look very good and crisp. There’s also an in-display fingerprint sensor for unlocking the device. Overall, the display here is slightly better than what you’ll find on the A34.
Cameras and Battery
The main camera here is a capable 50MP Sony IMX 766 camera which is very good. Along with it, there’s an 12MP Ultrawide camera and a 5MP macro lens. In front, there’s a 32MP selfie and you can record videos of up to 4K @30fps. The camera setup on the A54 is better than that of the A34. For power, there’s a 5,000mAh battery with 25W fast charge.
Again this is a very solid device but the pricing is true Samsung fashion is fair in USD but it’s rather steep in Naira. This is certainly one for those with fairly deep pockets.
