Samsung HP1 vs OmniVision OVB0B

Smartphone cameras are a big deal and today and in front of us, we have two image sensors that push the limits of smartphone photography. They are the Samsung HP1 vs OmniVision OVB0B.

Samsung and Omnivision are two of the top three companies in the world where image sensors are concerned.

Samsung was the first company to release a 200-megapixel image sensor. It is known as the S5KHP1. Samsung enjoyed the title for a while until Omnivision released their own 200MP camera, known as the OVB0B.

Going forward, there are always going to be comparisons of the Samsung HP1 vs OmniVision OVB0B. This is to see which 200MP camera is better.

So in today’s post, we’re going to be comparing both 200MP cameras side by side to see which one is better.

Samsung HP1 vs OmniVision OVB0B

We’re going to compare both cameras using the following parameters such as resolution/pixel count, sensor size, pixel size, and technology.

Resolution

Both image sensors have a resolution of 200MP. It’s a tie here.

Sensor size

The size of the sensor is very important. This is because the sensor contains the photosensitive area that catches light. The bigger the area, the better the camera.

The HP1 has a marginally bigger sensor and thus would take better pictures. Especially at night.

Pixel size

The pixel size refers to the sizes of the individual photo-collecting buckets on the image sensor. Bigger pixels will catch more light and take better pictures.

The Samsung HP1 has the bigger pixels albeit slightly. The difference of 0.03μm may not seem like much, but in photography terms, it’s quite a gap.

Technology

The HP1 uses Samsung’s Isocell 3.0 technology while the OVB0B uses OmniVision’s PureCel S technology. Both are based on CMOS and are very good.

Pixel binning

Both image sensors are binned as well. The HP1 is binned using Samsung’s Tetracell (4×4) binning method. This means that it would output photos of 50MP by default.

The OVB0B is binned using a 16×16 binning method and would output photos of 12.5MP.

Frame rate/video

The HP1 is capable of 8K@30fps videos at 50MP resolution and 4K@120fps at 12.5MP. It outputs the full 200MP @7.5fps.

The OVB0B is also capable of 8K@24/30fps videos at 50MP resolution and 4K@90fps. It also outputs the full 200MP@8fps.

Focus

The HP2 uses Double Super Phase-Detection Autofocus while the OVB0B uses a Quad Phase-Detection Autofocus.

Conclusion

In terms of pure optics, the Samsung HP1 is the better 200MP. On the other hand, the OVB0B has the better focus. The HP1 may have the better photo resolution at 50MP but OVB0B will pack in more detail at 12.5MP.

However, the performance of both image sensors will depend largely on the SoC used and the image processing algorithm.
