As you may very well know, the iPhone 14 series has been announced. This is a yearly custom for Apple and this year, we have got the iPhone 14 series.

As usual, almost every iPhone ever made is a flagship and the iPhone 14 series is not any different. Apple is a premium brand and thus, they put a lot of effort into making their smartphones look premium and expensive.

In the past, Apple was responsible for the latest innovations and everyone else on the Android side took notes. More recently, Apple has had to rebrand ideas from the Android side of the fence.

With the new iPhone 14 series, there is a bit of excitement to see what Apple has to offer. This year, there is no mini in this series, they are iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

The iPhone 14 series

iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 plus

These two phones share nearly the same specs and features with a few differences.

Both devices are made with an aluminum frame with ceramic shield glass protection both at the front and the back. They retain last year’s design and weigh 172g (iPhone 14) and 203g (iPhone 14+). There is an IP68 rating for water and dust protection here.

Both devices use last year’s Apple A15 Bionic SoC with an Apple GPU (5-cores). This SoC was the fastest mobile SoC before being succeeded by the A16 Bionic. Both devices also run on the latest iOS 16. For memory, they use LPDDR4x RAM and NVMe internal memory. The memory variants are 4GB RAM with 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB of storage.

There is a dual 12MP (main) + 12MP (ultrawide) camera for pictures as well as a 12MP + SL 3D sensor for selfies. The ultrawide also doubles as a macro camera as well.

The displays are where the iPhone 14 Plus justifies its increased price over the iPhone 14. The iPhone 14 Plus has a 6.7″ Super Retina XDR OLED display with a resolution of 2778 x 1284p. The pixel density is 458ppi, a refresh rate of 60Hz, and a max brightness of 1200 nits (sunlight mode).

The iPhone 14 on the other hand has a smaller 6.1″ Super Retina XDR OLED display with a resolution of 2532 x 1170p (FHD+). The refresh rate remains the same at 60Hz but has a slightly higher pixel density (460ppi) due to its smaller screen. The iPhone 14 display also maxes out at 1200 nits of brightness.

Apple has suspiciously been mute about the battery capacity. That notwithstanding, I can confirm that the iPhone 14 has a 3,279mAh Li-Ion battery while the 14 Plus has a bigger 4,325mAh battery. They have confirmed that both phones will support 20W fast charge, USB PD 2.0, 15W MagSafe, and 7.5W Qi charging. Both phones will also support 3G, 4G, and 5G networks worldwide. Although phones in the USA will use eSIM.

iPhone 13 series

iPhone 14 Pro and iphone 14 pro max

These two are the premium phones in the line-up and they are pricey too. They share similar specs, not only between them but also with the other two phones. There are also some differences between not only these two but also with the other two (iPhone 14 and 14 plus).

Both the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are built with a stainless steel frame and have full ceramic shield glass protection, both at the front and back. There is an IP68 rating here, a new dynamic island design and they both weigh 206g and 240g respectively.

Apple A16 Bionic

They both use the all-new A16 Bionic SoC with a 5-core Apple GPU. Both phones run on iOS 16. For memory, they use LPDD5 RAM and NVMe-based storage. The memory variants are 6GB RAM with 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB of storage.

In the camera department, there is a quad-camera setup here. Both phones have 48MP (main) + 12MP (telephoto), 12MP (ultrawide), and a time-of-flight 3D Lidar scanner for depth. For selfies, there is a dual 12MP + SL 3D sensor just like the earlier mentioned 14 and 14 Plus phones.

Like with the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, the displays are where both the iPhone 14 Pro Max rise above the iPhone 14 Pro.

The iPhone 14 Pro has a 6.1″ Super Retina XDR OLED display with a resolution of 2556 x 1179p (FHD+). The pixel density is 460ppi, a refresh rate of 120Hz, and a max brightness of 2000 nits.

The iPhone 14 Pro Max on the other hand has a much bigger 6.7″ Super Retina XDR OLED display with a sharper resolution of 2778 x 1290p (FHD+). The refresh rate remains the same at 120Hz and the larger screen, the pixel density stays at 460ppi. The iPhone 14 Pro Max display also maxes out at 2000 nits of brightness.

Both displays support HDR 10 and Dolby Vision. They are also protected by Apple’s ceramic glass shield in addition to the gorilla glass.

The iPhone 14 Pro Max houses a 4,323mAh battery while the 14 Pro uses a much smaller 3,200mAh battery. Both phones share the same charge speeds for fast charge (20W), USB PD, 15W MagSafe, and 7.5W Qi standards with the iPhone 14 and 14 plus.

Other features that all four phones share include: spatial audio, Dolby Atmos, stereo speakers, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0 LE, NFC, GPS, accelerometer, gyroscope, compass, light/ambient sensors, OIS, face ID, etc. They all also lack support for FM radio, a 3.5mm Audio jack, and an IR blaster.

The prices for all four phones are as follows: the iPhone 14 which is the most affordable starts from $899 and the iPhone 14 Plus starts from $999. The iPhone 14 Pro starts from $1099 and the iPhone 14 Pro Max starts from $1199.

These are all slightly more costly than the iPhone 13 series.
