Samsung Exynos

Samsung Exynos is a line of SoCs produced and marketed by Samsung. They are usually paired with Mali GPUs owned by ARM. Exynos chipsets, with the exception of a few instances, appear exclusively on Samsung phones.

The Exynos line has 5 custom cores namely:

After the failure of it’s custom cores to compete with and beat Qualcomm’s custom Kryo chips. Samsung have announced they will be closing down the division that produces custom cores. They intend to go use normal cores from ARM for their future Exynos chipsets.

Samsung tends to focus on the upper end of the market. This is due to their fierce rivalry with Apple in the flagship section but they have something for every one in their line up.


Entry level phones are at the bottom end of the smartphone market. These are basic android phone that can carry out the basic functions required of them. These are phone calls, SMS, social media etc. DO NOT hope to try to play high definition games like PES or PUBG on them as you’ll be sorely disappointed. Here you’ll find:

  • Exynos 7570 (Galaxy J2, J3, J4 and J5 prime)
  • Exynos 7578 (Galaxy A3)
  • Exynos 7580 (Galaxy A5, A7 and J7)
  • Exynos 7870 (Galaxy J5, J5 Pro, J6 and J7) and
  • Exynos 7880

Budget phones are good for just about most stuff you can do with a smartphone but due to the price tag that they come with, they will not offer you a lot of features. Performance may be below par for heavy apps and the phone may struggle (lag) through heavy use. Some of the SoCs here are:

  • Exynos 850 (Galaxy A04S, A13 and A21S),
  • Exynos 7884 (Galaxy A10, A20 and M10S),
  • Exynos 7885 (Galaxy A7, A8, A8+ and J7 Duo) and
  • Exynos 7904 (Galaxy A30, A30S, A40, M20, M30, Galaxy Tab A 8.4 and 10.1).

A midrange device offers a lot of smartphone features, performance is good, games run very well and it does not lag on heavy or prolonged use. Samsung only entered the midrange market recently but they seem to be doing quite well.

Their upper Midrangers in use here include:

  • Exynos 1280,
  • Exynos 1380 (Galaxy A54)
  • Exynos 9820 (Galaxy S10, S10e and S10+),
  • Exynos 9825 (Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+) and
  • Exynos 990 (Galaxy S20, S20+ and S20 ultra).

The lower midrangers here are:

  • Exynos 9609 (Motorola One Vision),
  • Exynos 9610 (Galaxy A50)
  • Exynos 9611 (Galaxy A50S, A51, M30S, M21, M31 and Galaxy Tab S6 lite)
  • Exynos 8890 (Meizu Pro 6 Plus, Galaxy S7, S7 edge and Galaxy Note 7) and
  • Exynos 8895 (Meizu 15 plus, Galaxy S8, S8+ and Galaxy Note 8),

Samsung Exynos SoCs are used on flagship killer phones as well. These are phones that  give the feel of using a premium flagship for a fraction of the price. The chipsets here leading the charge are the Exynos 2100 (Galaxy S21, S21+ and S21 ultra) and the Exynos 1080 (Vivo X60/60 Pro and X70)

A flagship phone brings all the premium qualities of a smartphone. These phones are the best in the market in terms of build quality, camera, gaming, performance etc. They are the best that money can buy.

The only remaining Exynos chipset that can be considered a true flagship is the Exynos 2200 (Galaxy S22, S22+ and S22 ultra).
