Samsung Galaxy A14 and A14 5G

Samsung Galaxy A14 and A14 5G

In this post we’re going to be looking at the Samsung Galaxy A14 and A14 5G. These are two new devices that have recently been released by Korean giants Samsung.

Whilst they are world renown for their flagship S series, with the most recent being the S23 series, Samsung does have a very healthy midrange segment.

These include the A, M and F series depending on the part of the world that you live in. There’s nothing to lose brain cells over as these phones are usually clones of each other. For example, the A13, F13 and M13 are all the same thing.

Samsung’s midrange phones are usually clones of each other designated for different geographical regions.

The Samsung Galaxy A14 and A14 5G are both midrange devices however the former is a lower midranger whilst the latter is an upper-midranger. Both phones however look like the S23 flagship and share the same aesthetic.

The A14

We begin with the A14, which (to me) is a lower midranger but some persons might even consider it to be a budget/entry level device which is incorrect. The key specs are:

  • SoC: Helio G80
  • GPU: Mali G52 MC2
  • RAM: LPDDR4x
  • Software: Android 13, One UI Core 5
  • Storage: eMMC 5.1
  • microSD: yes
  • Display: 6.6″ PLS-LCD, 1080p, 400ppi
  • Camera: Triple 50+5+2MP
  • Selfie: 13MP
  • Audio: single loudspeaker, 3.5mm jack
  • Video: 1080p@30fps
  • Battery: 5000mAh (15W charge)
  • Network: LTE Cat. 7
  • Bluetooth 5.1
  • WiFi 5
  • Prices: ₦116,900.00 (4+64GB) and ₦126,900.00 (4+128GB)

The A14 is powered by the MediaTek Helio G80 which is a fairly powerful SoC, boasting an AnTuTu score of 226k. This means that it can handle most games and apps out there. The software running this phone is Samsung’s One UI Core 5 based on Android 13.

There’s a 6.6″ 1080p LCD screen which does provide good looking images and videos. The main camera here is a 50MP Samsung JN1 which does okay in good lighting conditions. In front, there’s a 13MP selfie. For power, there’s a 5,000mAh battery with 15W fast charge.

If you are getting this device, keep your expectations low. It’s a lower midranger that would do just okay but wouldn’t wow you. The phone is also rather overpriced.

If you are looking for more affordable options for the same performance, you may want to check out the Redmi 12 or Tecno Spark 10 Pro.

The A14 5G

We now continue with the A14 5G, which (to me) is an upper midranger and a very solid device.

  • SoC: Exynos 1330 or Dimensity 700
  • GPU: Mali G68 MP2 or Mali G57 MC2
  • RAM: LPDDR4x
  • Software: Android 13, One UI Core 5
  • Storage: UFS 2.2
  • microSD: yes
  • Display: 6.6″ PLS-LCD, 1080p, 90Hz, 400ppi
  • Camera: Triple 50+2+2MP
  • Selfie: 13MP
  • Audio: single loudspeaker, 3.5mm jack
  • Video: 1080p@30fps
  • Battery: 5000mAh (15W charge)
  • Network: 5G and 4G LTE (Cat. 19)
  • Bluetooth 5.2
  • WiFi 5
  • Prices: $189 (Naira prices are not available)

Performance

The A15 5G has two variants. One of them carries the MediaTek Dimensity 700 (AnTuTu: 337,000) and the other houses the Samsung Exynos 1330 (AnTuTu: 414,000). Without mincing words, the one with the Exynos 1330 is far better. The one with the Dimensity 700 is much weaker. In fact, it’s basically last year’s Galaxy A13 5G in a new body running new software.

So it’s important to know this distinction. The part of the world where you live is going to determine the device that you’ll get. If you live in Africa or North America, you’ll probably get the one with the Dimensity 700 instead of the one with the Exynos 1330.

However, both processors are fairly good and will run your apps, games and social media smoothly.

Other specs

The display is the same 6.6″ FHD LCD that you’ll find on the the A14 but with one difference. The A14 5G display supports a 90Hz refresh rate.

The main camera (50MP Samsung JN1)is the same as the A14 as well, but with a better SoC on board, you should definitely expect better photo and video output. To power this device up, there’s a 5000mAh battery with 15W fast charge.

Whether you pick up the Dimensity 700 or Exynos 1330 variant of the A14 5G, you can be sure that you are getting a solid upper midrange device with the 5G connectivity.
