Tecno Phantom X

The Tecno Phantom lineup started its life as the flagship line of the Tecno brand. Its latest iteration today is the Tecno Phantom X. The tenth device in the series.

The Phantom line for some reason fell off the radar and was effectively replaced by the Camon line as Tecno’s premium brand. You would have been forgiven if you thought it was discontinued, but the Phantom line is back and back with a bang.

TECNO PHANTOM X Launch - Nigeria

Tecno Phantom X

Body

The phone weighs a rather hefty 201g and is sandwiched both at the front and the back by a Gorilla Glass 5. It comes in two color variants: starry night blue and Monet summer.

Display

The display is a huge curved 6.7″ Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080p or Full High Definition (FHD+). It has a tall 19.5:9 aspect ratio, a pixel density of 385ppi, and a refresh rate of 90Hz. The advertised maximum brightness is 500nits and the screen is protected by Gorilla Glass 5.

SoC, Software, and performance

The MediaTek Helio G95 is one of the standout Midrangers in the market and it is very capable. It is an octa-core setup with two Cortex A76 CPU cores running at 2.05GHz and six Cortex A55 CPU cores clocked at 2.0GHz. It is built on a 12nm process. The G95 is paired with the Mali G76 MC4 GPU.

The phone runs Android 11 out of the box and has the latest HiOS 7.6 installed.

This phone promises to be a performance beast with scores of 1670 on Geekbench and 309,055 on Antutu benchmarks.

Memory

The Tecno Phantom X has only one memory variant which is the 8/256GB variant.

Camera

The phone boasts a Triple camera set-up with a main wide camera, an ultrawide camera, and a telephoto camera.

The main camera is a 50MP wide camera. The company has refrained from stating its maker but GSMARENA and Kimovil say that it is a Samsung GN1 camera. Although Kimovil also called the Telephoto camera a depth sensor (which was wrong by the way). The rest cameras are all generic.

The main wide camera has an aperture of F/1.85, a pixel size of 1.2µm, and a sensor size of 1/1.31″. All of which are very impressive. The camera is binned and will output 12.5MP photos at a bigger 2.4µm.

The Ultrawide camera has an 8MP resolution, an F/2.2 aperture, 1.12µm pixel size, and a sensor size of 1/1.4″. The Telephoto camera has a 13MP resolution with an aperture of F/2.4, a 50mm lens, and is capable of 2x optical zoom.

The rear cameras are capable of shooting 4K video at 60/30FPS and 1080p video at 30fps as well as slow-motion videos at 240fps.

This device sports a dual set-up (48MP + 8MP) for selfies and on paper, they look impressive. The 48MP is the main selfie while the 8MP is an Ultrawide snapper. The selfie records 1080p video at 30fps.

Battery

The battery has a capacity of 4700mAh and it supports 33W fast charging. Tecno says that it can charge up to 70% in 30 minutes. There is also a 33W capable fast charger in the box to help you take advantage of the phone’s fast charging capabilities.

Connectivity/sensors

This device is 4G LTE enabled and does not have 5G connectivity. It supports LTE Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 20, 28 (a & b), 38, 40 and 41. It also supports Bluetooth 5 and Wi-Fi 5 out of the box.

There is no Infrared blaster or NFC on this phone. The USB port is a type C 2.0 port. The fingerprint is an under-display optical fingerprint sensor. There is also a proximity sensor, accelerometer, GPS, and of course, a gyroscope.

Price and availability

The Tecno Phantom X sells for a whopping ₦228,000.00.

Conclusion

The Tecno Phantom X is a very decent phone for the specs alone. It can comfortably trade blows with devices from Xiaomi, Samsung, and Oppo within the Midrange class but that’s as good as it gets.

The review from GSMARENA shows that the cameras are below par except for the night and selfie modes. The charging speed is slower than advertised and the display is no brighter than 450nits which for an AMOLED display is very poor.

Finally, we have the price. It is way overpriced for a midrange. For ₦228,000 you could buy a Redmi Note 10 Pro, Redmi Note 10 5G, Redmi Note 10S, Vivo V21 and V21e, Tecno Camon 17 Pro, Samsung Galaxy A52, and A72 amongst others. These are phones that can comfortably take on and beat the Tecno Phantom X. For that price, it is a no for me.
