Dimensity 7200 Everything you must know

MediaTek have announced the Dimensity 7200 SoC for the upper and premium Midrange smartphone markets.

The Dimensity 7200 comes hot on the heels of the Dimensity 9200 and 8200. It is meant for the top end of the midrange market and this means that phones of that caliber will be sporting this SoC.

This SoC has three focal areas that it is going to be very good at. These are performance, gaming and photography/videography.

With the release of the Dimensity 7200, it seems as though that MediaTek may be following Qualcomm’s naming schemes by using a number for each section of the market.

The Dimensity 9 and 8 are flagship and flagship killer grade respectively, while the Dimensity 7 is upper-midrange. We could possibly have a Dimensity 6 series for the lower midrange and a Dimensity 4 for the low end.

Dimensity 7200 specs

  • CPU (big cores): 2 Cortex A715 (2.8GHz)
  • CPU (small cores): 6 Cortex A510
  • GPU: ARM Mali G610 MC4
  • Fab: 2nd Gen 4nm TSMC (enhanced 5nm)
  • Instruction Set: ARMv9
  • RAM: LPDDR5 (6400Mbps)
  • Storage: UFS 3.1
  • Gaming engine: HyperEngine 5.0
  • ISP: MediaTek Imagiq 765 + 14-bit HDR ISP
  • Display: MediaTek MiraVision (support 144Hz Refresh rates on FHD+ displays)
  • Modem: sub-6GHz 5G Modem (Dual 5G)
  • WiFi 6E
  • Bluetooth 5.3 LE

Performance

The performance on this SoC is very impressive as the 2 big cores can pull in a lot of processing power to handle nearly any big app that is thrown at it. The remaining 6 small cores are more than capable of managing the remaining tasks.

When it comes to gaming, the Mali G610 MC4 is very capable when rendering graphics and is well supported by the HyperEngine for games.

The entire SoC is built on a very efficient 4nm TSMC which should keep it could and allow the SoC to run at max power for longer before throttling kicks in.

The only thing that would hold this SoC back is optimization. If MediaTek can ensure that software developers optimize for the Dimensity 7200, it should be a world beater in its class.

Memory and Storage

This SoC has support for LPDDR5 RAM with speeds of up 6400Mbps (of data speeds) and internal storage of UFS 3.1. This should enhanced the speed of the SoC as data transfer speeds between CPU cores, RAM and the internal storage should be a lot quicker. This would speed up the SoC even faster.

Photography and Videography

One of the strengths of this SoC is its supports for cameras as well as its photographic and videography output.

The Dimensity 7200 has support for up to 200MP cameras. Onboard, there’s the very good MediaTek Imagiq 765 with an additional 14-bit HDR ISP. On top of that, this SoC can also record 4K HDR videos and play them back at the same speed.

Image processing and video capture has always been a weak point for MediaTek SoCs but from the above, you can tell that MediaTek are taking it seriously now.

What remains now is to see how it performs in real life use.

Display

This SoC supports refresh rates of up to 144Hz as long as the display resolution is not more than FHD (1080P).

Network and connectivity

This SoC is well equipped to handle network connections. According to MediaTek, the Dimensity 7200 has a 3GPP Release-16 standard Sub-6GHz 5G modem with up to 4.7Gbps downlink, and supports triband Wi-Fi 6E connectivity and next-gen Bluetooth 5.3.
