SD695 5G vs SD732G vs SD720G

Snapdragon 695 5G – A curious case

Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 695 5G late last year and it has mostly flown under the radar. At least till now.

The Snapdragon 695 5G is a midrange SoC. Now for those in the know, Qualcomm has a 4 tiered system of SoCs. These are the:

  • SD400 series (Entry level/budget)
  • SD600 series (Lower midrange)
  • SD700 series (Upper midrange)
  • SD800 series (Flagship)

Taking a look at the name could get one into thinking that the SD695 is a lower midrange SoC. This is very far from the truth.

The Snapdragon 695 5G (or SD695) is a bonafide upper midranger. Well, how’s that possible?

We’ll soon see. In this post, we’ll be comparing the SD695 against the SD732G and the SD720G. Both of which are its predecessors in the upper midrange department.

Performance

Looking at the CPUs alone, it is very evident why the SD695 is a superior SoC. It houses 2 Kryo 660 Gold big cores based on Cortex A78. The SD732G (Kryo 470) and the SD720G (Kryo 465) both use big cores based on Cortex A76.

The SD695 also has a better GPU (Adreno 619) which would help it handle graphics/games better. The SD732G/SD720G both use the older Adreno 618.

Benchmarks

So with what we’ve seen about the CPU and GPU information, it is no surprise that the SD695 is way ahead on the benchmarks.

Photography/Videography

For all its power, the SD695 comes third here. The SD720G and SD732G both come first and second. They have superior ISPs (Spectra 350L) and AI units (Hexagon 692 and 686). The SD695 uses an inferior Spectra 346T and a Hexagon 686.

Both the SD720G/732G can both support cameras up to 192MP. The SD695 maxes out at 108MP.

Again, both older SoCs can do 4K@30fps video. The SD695 can only 1080p@30fps.

All things being equal, the two older SoCs will triumph over the newer SD695 in photo and video.

Display support

The SD732G can support displays of up to 1440p whilst the SD695 and 720G can only support up to 1080p.

Network

The SD695 is a 5G SoC so it’s very obvious that it is the better SoC here in terms of connectivity. It was built for it.

Battery/efficiency/heating

The SD695 uses a more efficient 6nm process. As a result, it is going to be a lot more efficient at using system resources (especially batteries) when compared to the other two.

Conclusion

If the SD695 was given a 700 series name like SD735G for example, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. But it wasn’t. So here we are.

The SD695 is an SoC built for CPU performance and Network connectivity. It looks like it’s going to be very good at those too.

The SD732G and SD720G are more balanced SoCs. These are all-rounders, providing decent performance, photography, videography, connectivity, etc.
